Beachfront family resort on 17th-century plantation on St. Croix

Family owned and operated since it opened as an 11-room inn in 1948, The Buccaneer is situated on 340 hilly acres between a large lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. The resort features three beautiful, soft-sand beaches. Whistle Beach, accessible only by path, offers tranquil swimming and sunbathing. A close-in reef creates calm-water swimming and snorkeling off Grotto Beach; a freeform pool is adjacent. Centrally located Mermaid Beach includes a casual restaurant and bar. The 18-hole championship golf course overlooks the sea. A complimentary buffet breakfast is served daily in an open-air restaurant in the Great House, with panoramic Caribbean Sea views.

Parts of the Great House date from the 1650s, when a Knight of Malta established a tobacco-and-indigo plantation on the site. He situated the Great House slightly behind a hilltop to conceal it from pirates. As a boy, Alexander Hamilton lived there, as did St. Croix's first Danish governor.


Family Cottage Suites - Located on the hillside between the Great House and the beach, each suite has a patio or balcony overlooking a spacious lawn and the sea. One king bed and two twin beds. Deluxe Great House Suite - These suites are located on the first floor in the main building. They have a master bedroom with a four-poster king bed, walk-in closet, dressing area, and private bathroom. A separate living area has two sofa beds and another bathroom. Ficus Suite #400 - This two-bedroom, two-bath suite is located above the Grotto beach and pool, with a spacious patio overlooking the sea. One king bed and two queen beds. Master bathroom has spa tub. Small refrigerator, safe, phone, hair dryer, air conditioning, and cable TV. Most rooms have ceiling fans, irons and ironing boards.

Frigate Suite #401 - Located above the Grotto beach and pool, this suite has a spacious patio overlooking the pool and sea. Master bedroom with four-poster king bed and master bathroom with double shower and separate tub. The sitting room has two day beds and a half bath. Small refrigerator, safe, phone, hair dryer, air conditioning, and cable TV.

Frigate Room #402 - Two queen beds in guestroom with patio overlooking the pool and sea. Can connect with Frigate Suite. Small refrigerator, safe, phone, hair dryer, air conditioning, and cable TV.

Deluxe Oceanfront - One king or two queen beds. Oceanfront patio with beach view. Located along the shore between two beaches. 16-foot-high wooden ceilings. Tropical decor includes tile floors, rattan and light-wood furniture, pastel and floral draperies, bedspreads, and upholstery. Satellite TV. Coffeemaker and small refrigerator.
